Workers recently finished gutting the train shed behind Main Street Station — the first step toward plans to turn the building into an indoor market à la Union Market in Washington and Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.
The city is conducting a market study and talking with potential vendors. Jeannie Welliver, the project development manager, says the city wants a mix of tenants that reflects Richmond. Construction is scheduled to end next year.
Built in 1901, the train shed most recently served as a shopping mall and then office space.
