Man Man and Bermuda Triangles at Strange Matter

Tuesday, May 6. 8 p.m.

Man Man makes “Trout Mask Replica” pop music. Like Captain Beefheart, the Philadelphia group’s deconstructed implosions chuck melodic curveballs from left field. But for all its idiosyncratic tendencies, its weirdo carnival rock isn’t strictly an obtuse pursuit, because its members consistently find a way to make their surrealistic pillows comfy and cozy for any head. Their 2013 release, “On Oni Pond,” is as close to a straight-up pop record as they’ve made, curbing the experimental flights of fancy that once defined them for a streamlined funkified journey. Despite its relatively easy digestion, it’s still an off-kilter affair with a scrap-heap assemblage of styles and influences invoking the Sun City Girls, Moondog and Black Mountain. Man Man plays with Richmond’s rock experimentalists Bermuda Triangles on Tuesday, May 6, at Strange Matter. Doors open for the 18 and older show at 8 p.m. Admission is $14-$16. strangematterrva.com.
