Art can’t be mastered. Like doctors, artists (the good ones at least) never stop practicing. And during the course of his life, Louis Draper never did. The retrospective by former Richmond resident and photographer shows a body of work of an artist who spent his life redefining his craft. A founding member of the black photographers’ collective, Kamoinge Workshop, Draper and his stark, black-and-white photographs captured moments of mid-century American like with compassion, empathy and nuance. Adept at portraiture and abstraction, his impressive body of work is defined by his ability to make the complicated simple, leaving room for interpretation while remaining true to his subjects. The exhibition opens at Candela Books and Gallery on Friday, Jan. 10, from 5-8 p.m., and runs through Feb. 22. candelabooks.com.
