JJ Burton, Ohbliv and DJ Harrison at Strange Matter

Friday, Dec. 27. 9 p.m.

Reggie Pace and Scott Burton never stop making music. It’s like they have a disease or something. And if JJ Burton — the new music experimental soul sound project from these longtime co-conspirators — is any indication, I hope they never get well. Their debut single, “Ohh Bay!!! (Ohh Baby)” is a post-Marvin Gaye, “Trouble Man” soundtrack contemplation that invokes the shaded atmospheres of the Thievery Corporation. Held together by Burton’s subtle, six-string weaving, the capaciousness of the duo’s (now a trio with Devonne Harris) fluid empirical approach isn’t blinded by science; it uses modern technology not as a crutch, but as a tool to get to worlds less traveled. Music-nerd hyperbole aside, all I know is that I can’t stop pressing play. JJ Burton plays Friday, Dec. 27, at Strange Matter, with fellow audio scientists Ohbliv and DJ Harrison. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. strangematterrva.com.
