Home Trend: Reclaim the Past

Everything old is new again, as sustainable furnishings become more and more desirable on the home front. What once might have been considered architectural waste -- cracked and worn columns, urns and balusters — are finding new life in the form of decorative accessories, reborn as end tables in the living room or planters in the garden.

Deborah Valentine of V for the Home notes an increasingly popular European trend of retrofitting industrial metal pieces into coffee tables, sideboards and other furnishings. "People are looking for a fresh and modern look," she says, "but they also need texture, a bit of earthiness. That's where these pieces come into play."
