The Hoax Hunters make gloriously noisy pop rock ’n’ roll. Consisting of guitarist and vocalist P.J. Sykes, drummer James O’Neill and bassist Ben Nicastro, this local trio offers a catchy amalgamation of 1980s indie, emo and punk tendencies. The group’s first full-length release, “Comfort & Safety,” is a split release between the vinyl-only North Carolina label, Negative Fun, and Sykes’ Richmond-based label, Cherub Records. Its careening yet controlled offerings bombard the senses, tunefully drawing the listener in through a torrent of distorted abrasions with memorable compositions. Joining it on this night of retro futures are the obtuse pop of Richmond’s Positive No and the swirling melodies of one-man sound-generator Dave Watkins on guitar and pedals. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. gallery5arts.org.
