In summer 1862, the Union economy nearly ground to a halt as pennies, nickels and dimes mysteriously disappeared. In this talk, Michael T. Caires, ACWM, will discuss how northerners reacted, what it tells us about the changing landscape of capitalism and government in the mid-19th century, and where the coins went.
