Richmond native Henry Hager, the son of former Lieutenant Governor John Hager and his wife, Maggie, became engaged to first daughter Jenna Bush in Maine Aug. 15. President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, announced the news Thursday.
Although Laura Bush's press secretary would not confirm it, word has it that Jenna Bush will be moving to Charlottesville, where Hager is starting his second and final year at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business this month. No wedding date has been set.
The Hager and Bush families refused to publicly acknowledge the couple's initial courtship - which Style Weekly first reported in January 2005. "That's a private family matter," Maggie Hager told Style at the time. "We cannot comment on the girls' personal life," a spokeswoman for Laura Bush had said.
But the two were spotted at President Bush's inauguration, and eventually at events around Washington, D.C., Richmond and elsewhere. Jenna joined the Hager family in Richmond for a pre-Christmas visit in 2005. Then in April 2006, Jenna and her twin sister, Barbara, secretly ran the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k, enjoying brunch with Hager afterward at Zeus Gallery Café. Henry was Jenna's guest at a White House dinner in November.
Hager, a graduate of St. Christopher's School, was a White House aide, and worked on Karl Rove's team to re-elect Bush. He did not immediately return a phone message left by Style.
Jenna, who lives in Washington, D.C., recently finished a book, "Ana's Story," which is "based on her experience with UNICEF," says Sally McDonough, press secretary for Laura Bush and former employee of the Martin Agency's Slay PR. The book is set for release Sept. 28.
Aside from wedding plans, Jenna is at work on her next project with her mother, a children's book scheduled for publication in the spring. -- Jason Roop
