Grandpa Beats VMFA to the Punch on Instagram

If you search for the Virginia of Museum of Fine Arts on the photo-sharing app Instagram, you might find an official account with pictorial updates from the museum — shots from events, the galleries and the archives.

But you're more likely to find the unused account of a white-bearded, bespectacled man sharing two shots of his grandchildren.

The grandfather doesn't appear to be particularly tech-savvy. He abandoned the account the same day he created it in September 2012, and the only "likes" on his pictures came from him — a classic dad move on social media.

Still, he managed to beat VMFA to its preferred handle, "VMFA." The state museum was forced to resort to a redundant but acceptable "VMFAmuseum."

Suzanne Hall, the museum's chief communications officer, posted a comment under a shot of a child with a box of markers that asked the grandpa to consider giving up the account if he isn't going to use it.

"Sadly, the grandpa seldom checks his Instagram," Hall writes in an email. "We've also appealed to Instagram, but, alas, no response."
