GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter

Opens Nov. 26

Year after year, the week of Thanksgiving reigns supreme in its ability to squelch the fun of extracurricular events. A venerable no man's land of happenings, 99 percent of venues and organizations hardly see a point in fighting a city, state and nationwide commitment to long-distance traveling, turkey comas, football and holiday-sale shopping. A distinct lull before the true holiday season hits like a backed-up fireman's hose on full blast, the week of Thanksgiving is tough to find some down-time entertainment. Offering up an oasis is the opening of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's Dominion GardenFest of Lights. Showcasing outdoor displays of more than 40 miles of light strands, the annual installation is scheduled to open Nov. 26 at 5 p.m., with a light-switch ceremony, candle luminaries and ice-sculpting demonstrations.
