Family Reconnects After Katrina

Locally, Freeman's brother, David, has found a construction job. Her cousin, Rhonda, is here too. She's a veteran barber, Freeman says. Losing New Orleans is so painful, Freeman says, because most of her family lost businesses and good jobs. "They were established entrepreneurs in New Orleans," she says.

Her father, however, needs help of another nature. While he escaped the storm's ravages, Freeman says, he had a "massive heart attack" upon reaching Augusta, Ga., and is staying at a hospital there. And her brother Saul Jr. is being treated in Houston for "infections" he received while wading through the aftermath of Katrina.

Luckily, she says, everyone is accounted for. "With hope there is power and prayer," she says. "Now we need to pray for the recovery of my father and my brother." — Scott Bass
