Event Pick:“The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead,” documentary at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond

Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9

Like Rodney Dangerfield, the Damned don’t get no respect. The clown princes of the British punk movement never got the academic accolades of the Sex Pistols or the Clash. But at its best, the ever-evolving band matched or bettered either band’s accomplishments. On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, the valleys and peaks of its ongoing 35-year career are chronicled in the new documentary, “The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead,” at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. Directed by Wes Orshoski, rare live performances and band interviews are interspersed with firsthand testimonies from Clash guitarist Mick Jones, Pink Floyd drummer and one-time producer Nick Mason, Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses and others. Tickets for the Saturday screening are sold out. So don’t sleep on tickets before the Sunday 8 p.m. showing does too. $7. — Chris Bopst
