A mixture of Radiohead’s art house rock and the shifting modal moods of Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks,” the Young Rapids seep into your senses like a slow-acting intoxicant. The group of sound pharmacists from the nation’s capital administers its medications in carefully measured doses on its sophomore release, “Pretty Ugly,” on Babe City Records. From the detached emotional distance of “Odd Numbers” to the spacious melancholy of “Tongue Turns Black,” the quartet’s abstract intimacies never go for the literal approach. On Thursday, Jan. 28, Young Rapids lets you fill in the blanks when they take the stage at Strange Matter. Opening for them will be Woodbridge astrologists End Year and Richmond groups Venus Guytrap and Hot Reader. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5. strangematterrva.com.
