Event Pick: Tommy Stinson and Long Arms at Gallery5

July 29

The Replacements and Guns N’ Roses are a lot alike. Though the former ’80s underground sensations made chump change compared with their counterparts, both were able to articulate their teenage wastelands to audiences that eluded their peers. And both died young, imploding under the weight of their excesses and expectations, before each was recently resurrected to cash in on their respective legends. The other thing that solidifies the bond between the two is bassist Tommy Stinson. While he was but one of the many hired guns in Axl Rose’s Trump-like debasing of the Gun N’ Roses brand, he was a pivotal force in the Replacements and subsequent groups Bash & Pop and Perfect. The educated guess is that you’ll hear more of his originals, and maybe the drunken oldies of his misspent youth than his middle-aged Chinese Democracies when he comes to Galley5 on Friday, July 29. Joining him for the fascinating indie-rock crap shoot are Richmond replacement devotees Long Arms, playing a rare acoustic set. Doors open at 7 p.m. $10-$13.
