The last time I saw Chris Wood, he was inundated by hippies. His avant-jazz-funk group Medeski, Martin and Wood had just gotten off tour opening for Phish and the trio went from drawing a handful of people to filling theaters because of its affiliation with the jam rockers. The Wood Brothers, formed in 2004 by the nimble bassist with his guitarist brother, Oliver Wood, and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, is a continuing exploration of American roots music. The group’s newest release, “Paradise,” is the band’s most accessible foray into the past, present and future. Recorded at Black Keys’ guitarist Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye studio in Nashville, the stripped-down, feel-based blues of such tunes as “American Heartache” and “Singing to Strangers” showcases the trio’s back-to-basics principles. The Wood Brothers bring their modern mojo hands to the Broadberry on Friday, Feb. 26. Opening is Texas blues purist Seth Walker. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $20-$25. thebroadberry.com.
