June 26

Unlike the separation between church and state in politics, the division between performer and audience in music greatly diminishes the communal experience of audio expression. That’s why hip-hop still retains its cross-cultural authenticity. At its egoless best, there’s no partition dividing what’s being said from what’s being heard. The Richmond Rap Round Robin, a rotating showcase of aspiring wordsmiths at Gallery5, embodies that sentiment. Featuring the sounds of Richmond raconteurs Black Liquid, P.T. Barnem, Swordplay and Jake Bond with Baltimore MCs Drew Scott and 83 Cutlass, each performer spins a single yarn before passing the mic to the next prose pusher during the course of six rounds. The live-compilation tape of rhyme and rhythm ensures that there will be no break in the action with all those involved being intrinsically linked to the ebb and flow of each performance. Doors open for the all ages showcase Friday, June 26, at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. gallery5arts.org.
