The Mynabirds play a slithering style of ’80s pop soul. The mechanized emotion vehicle of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Laura Burhenn — a former touring member of Postal Service and Bright Eyes — employs drum machines, synthesizers and electronic gadgetry in her world-weary gazes into future’s past. Her 2015 release, “Lovers Know,” is a slow simmering confessional. From the Atari-beat whispers of “Shake Your Head Yes” to the Breakfast Club, synth-pop meditation “Say Something,” Burhenn’s wounded but unbowed vocal intonations shape the skeletal arrangements with direct emotional ambience. The Mynabirds bring mood ring sounds to Strange Matter on Monday, Sept. 28. Bad Bad Hats from Minneapolis and locals Venus Guytrap open. Doors for the 18-and-older show open at 9 p.m. $10. strangematterrva.com.
