Since opening its doors two years ago, the Coalition Theater has become Richmond’s premiere funny hole. Now the group is hosting its first-ever comedy festival, aptly named the 2nd Best Comedy Fest from Thursday, June 18, through Saturday, June 20. “We want to consider ourselves the second best to anyone,” jokes the managing director, Matt Newman. “There’re a lot of great comedy festivals; we’re here to make the other festivals look good.” To that end, the group has invited some exciting comedians and improv groups they witnessed while touring across the country to perform and teach workshops here in Richmond; cities represented include Chicago, New York, New Orleans and Philadelphia. Probably the most popular night will be the Saturday 8 p.m. show featuring a local troupe as well as Upstairs Gallery from Chicago and North Coast from New York which does a totally improvised hip-hopera where it breaks into raps during scenes. But there’s plenty of good stuff to enjoy all three nights, including sketch comedy, improvised movies, genre homages, and a one-man silent sketch show; the classes will be held Saturday during the day. Admission is $10. Check out details at 2ndbestfest.com.
