Event Pick: Shemekia Copeland at the Tin Pan

Oct. 16

As the old saying goes, don’t fix what ain’t broken. That’s what Shemekia Copeland does. The Harlem-born singer doesn’t mess with the blues — she just keeps filling up the tank so it will continue to run smoothly. The daughter of legendary blues guitarist Johnny Copeland shakes her moneymaker on her 2015, Oliver Wood-produced album, “Outskirts of Love.” Her fire-and-brimstone reinventions of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee’s “The Battle Is Over (But the War Goes On)” and ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago” showcase her innate ability to make any song she covers her own. Deeply soulful, her voice recalls the spiritual urgency of Mavis Staples with a stunning delivery and tone that defines each emotional moment she seeks to convey. Shemekia Copeland gets her mojo working on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Tin Pan. Doors open at 7 p.m. before she takes the stage at 8. $40-$45. tinpanrva.com.
