Any discussion about 20th-century art must include Salvador Dali. One of the most influential creative forces in the history of civilization, the Spanish surrealist painter continues to have a profound affect on how we view and interpret personal and collective imagination. Starting on Saturday, April 23, the exhibition “Salvador Dali: the Argillet Collection,” takes over the walls at Chasen Galleries. The one-week-only showcase features copperplate etchings, originals, tapestries and Limoges plates by the master artist from the collection of Dali’s lifelong printmaker and friend, Pierre Argillet. This is a rare opportunity to not only acquaint yourself with the artist’s lesser-known works from his publisher and confidante of more than 50 years, but also see photos and films of Dali from the family’s personal collection. Next weekend, Argillet’s daughter and curator of the exhibition, Christine Argillet, will be visiting the gallery for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion about art and her family’s relationship with the legendary cultural icon.
