Instead of going to see a band, why not join one? As anyone who has played music with other people will tell you, the only thing better than listening to music is playing it. On Wednesday, May 6, Strange Matter is hosting Rock Lotto, the annual benefit for Girls Rock Camp RVA, the local nonprofit that runs a free week-long music camp for girls ages 8 to 14. Here’s how it works: 40 people put their names into a hat and eight quintets will be instantly formed when the names are drawn at random. The new groups then have two weeks to work up a 10-20 minute set of original music to be performed May 29 at Gallery5. Sign-ups take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. girlsrockrva.org.
