When “The Nutcracker” made its stage debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Sunday, Dec. 18, 1892, I wonder if any involved realized what a lasting impression the two-act ballet would have. I’m sure they were fully aware of the beauty of the work, but I’m confident that no one thought that 123 years later, a dance company in Richmond still would be packing houses with its own presentation of the libretto adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” This Friday through Wednesday, Dec.18-23, the Richmond Ballet and the Richmond Symphony conclude their annual run of holiday performances of “The Nutcracker” at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage. Featuring the timeless music of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, Stoner Winslett’s version of the holiday fantasy is a testament to its enduring appeal.
