Mipso makes music the old fashioned way — without electricity. The North Carolina quartet’s acoustic offerings are a throwback. But it sounds modern and immediate in a way that eludes many of the group’s contemporaries in the pre-Edison school of music making. Mipso’s new release, “Old Time Reverie,” looks back and forward at the same time. The organic sweetness of “Down in the Water” and the bluegrass-tinged tale “Marianne” invoke the Carter Family and Lake Street Dive in the sense that a good song played with conviction never goes out of style. A quartet that truly plays as a team, Mipso bring its timeless charms to Ashland Coffee and Tea on Thursday, Sept. 17. Local singer and songwriter Skylar Gudasz opens. 8 p.m. $15-$18. ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.
