It must be strange to be Lucy Dacus. Before your first record even comes out, you’re being heralded as the next big thing by a litany of national above- and below-ground publications. While that’s a strangeness any musician would gladly welcome, it also adds a lot of pressure to deliver the goods. Thankfully, the Richmond band, fronted and defined by the engaging voice of singer and songwriter Lucy Dacus, is worthy of the hype. Her music is one of fragile beauty. Her winning trick is being able to make her personal, folk-rooted rock confessions an empowering experience. On “Strange Torpedo,” Dacus channels her inner P.J. Harvey with her wounded but unbowed yearning, giving the measured build and release an understated eloquence. On Friday, March 4, Dacus gives birth to her highly anticipated debut release, “No Burden,” at the Broadberry. Budding Richmond superstars Rikki Shay and Spooky Cool open. Doors open at 8 p.m. $8-$10.
