I’m not one for esoteric pursuits. If music doesn’t move me physically, then nine times out of 10 my head won’t be moved either. Ken Mode delivers body blows. In a nutshell, the aggression discharge unit from Winnipeg, Manitoba, plays carefully crafted, metal-tinged riff rock. The noisy outbursts it imparts are rooted in the tightly coiled releases of Shellac, Jesus Lizard and other rock-based ugly heads in the American underground of the ’90s. Liberating in its fiendish attention to detail and full-hearted embrace of bad intentions, Ken Mode besieges bodies Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Strange Matter. Joining it are the cannonading blasts of Child Bite from Detroit and Richmond’s Prayer Group, with stand-up from Toronto-based comedian Garrett Jamieson. Doors open for the 18-and-older show at 9 p.m. $8-$10. strangematterrva.com.
