Event Pick: Jorma Kaukonen at the Tin Pan

Nov. 27

Before I got into working for alternative weeklies, I spent a couple of years on a construction site in Northern California. Some of my fellow workers were Bay Area natives who grew up in the ’60s and had music stories about groups like the Jefferson Airplane playing their high school proms. The guitarist who helped define that band’s psychedelic sound, Jorma Kaukonen, has become known for his bluesy work with Hot Tuna and as a solo artist, earning a ranking on Rolling Stone’s list of all-time greats. A virtuoso steeped in old-school country blues, Kaukonen’s solo shows are meditative affairs with a long and varied catalog of songs to choose from. His latest album, 2015’s “Ain’t in No Hurry,” harkens to Depression-era hits. He plays on Sunday, Nov. 27, at the Tin Pan listening room. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 7. Tickets are $65 in advance and $70 at the door.
