Event Pick: Ivan Appelrouth at Crossroads Coffee and Ice Cream

Sunday, Aug. 23

Blues guitarist Ivan Appelrouth lets his six-string do his talking. A refreshing reprieve from verbal onslaughts, Appelrouth’s slow-hand style is more Cool Hand Luke than Eric Clapton. His intuitive use of space invokes the melodic economy of B.B. King using notes and phrases to emphasize emotion rather than dazzle with fret-board dexterity. Released on EllerSoul Records in 2011, “Blue and Instrumental” is his first recording as a bandleader and perfectly captures his fluid style. From the of midtempo rockin’ blues of “Olsen Ranch Shuffle” to his organ-driven take on English clarinetist Acker Bilk’s timeless ballad, “Stranger on the Shore,” Appelrouth and his assembled team of crack players breathe new life into old forms. Ivan Appelrouth brings his history lessons to Crossroads Coffee and Ice Cream on Sunday, Aug. 23. Showtime is 5-8:30 p.m. Admission for the all-ages show is free.
