If you’ve never seen a step show, you’re in for a treat. The complex performance art mixes percussive drill movement with singing, speaking, chanting, and yes, plenty of drama. It’s grown incredibly complex since it started when black World War I veterans entered college and brought a drill-like component to their contemporary dance moves. More often nowadays, hip-hop moves are featured in this powerful cultural tradition. The annual Fall Block Step Show will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at Altria Theater, and it features the talents of fraternity and sorority members at Virginia Commonwealth University. This is the largest step show in Virginia. Audiences can reach about 5,000 people and step teams compete not only for prize money but also bragging rights. Tickets are $14. Doors open at 6 p.m. altriatheater.com.
