Shannon Cleary is an unassuming chap. But don’t be fooled by his Everyman demeanor. The humble and self-effacing musician and WRIR radio show host is one of the city’s most dedicated and vocal proponents of the local scene. Continuing Friday through Sunday, Aug. 21-23, after last week’s opening showcase at Gallery5, Cleary and WRIR present Commonwealth of Notions Vol. 5, the annual homegrown music festival highlighting talent from the 804 over three evenings at Strange Matter, Sound of Music Recording Studios and the Broadberry. From the everyone-on-the-dance-floor sound of Toxic Moxie to the sparse post-punk landscapes of the recently reactivated Canary Oh Canary, the festival boasts an impressive and varied lineup of Richmond bands and musicians. Proceeds benefit WRIR. See our calendar listings for show times and each night’s schedule of performers. wrir.org.
