Elvis Costello at Innsbrook Pavilion

Wednesday, July 20

Buddy Holly may have had the glasses, but Elvis Costello is the probably the first genuine geek to reinvent himself as a true rock ‘n’ roll songwriter. Born Declan McManus, Costello began his professional existence as a computer programmer in the early 1970s, recording demos on the side while hoping to land a contract. Taking the first name from Presley and his mother’s maiden name for his last, Costello and his band, the Attractions, released his debut record, “My Aim Is True,” in 1977. His second, “This Year’s Model,” followed quickly in 1978, establishing Costello as a patron saint of punk rock with his stripped-down production, lyrical cynicism and reckless abandon. Responsible for such classic songs as “Pump It Up,” “Radio Radio” and “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,” Costello and his band the Imposters are scheduled to perform at Innsbrook Pavilion on Wednesday, July 20, at 6 p.m. $25-$100.
