With a tongue-in-cheek salute to pop art, Art Works Gallery’s new show explores the validity of the artist’s identity as a corporate brand through a series of sensationalist self-portraits. It also examines the mutual influence that the artist and observer have on one another. “Edit: Ed” features Virginia artist Ed Whelan’s depictions of himself in a variety of formats, including mass-produced masks and a 3-D action figure to illustrate how participation affects the work. The son of a Polish art historian, Whelan earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Art Institute of Chicago and was artist in residence at the International School of Painting in Umbria, Italy. “Edit: Ed” opens with an artist’s reception at Art Works Gallery on Friday, Jan. 25, and runs to Feb. 17. Other shows include the annual, juried Simply Photography 10 exhibit, three solo exhibits and the monthly juried All Media Art Show. Free. artworksrichmond.com.
