We've been hearing a lot recently about a new Mexican restaurant in South Side. Don Jose on Hull Street Road opened its doors in January and high praise for the restaurant's authentic Mexican food soon followed. Don Jose certainly offers an enormous menu. Some of the items the burritos, tacos and nachos seem pretty normal. But others, like the carnitas, golden brown pork with rice, beans and tortillas, are more interesting. Don Jose also has a sizeable lunch menu, served until 3 p.m., with lunch margaritas for only $1.50. 7128 Hull Street Road. 675-2700. There's also a location in Colonial Heights. The Shockoe Bottom club has been replaced by a classy restaurant/ nightclub called Radius. The change is not just a new name, but a whole new atmosphere. "When you walk in the door, you can tell it's very unique," says Radius' manager Brian White. White must mean the series of waterfalls cascading through glass over your head in the entryway. Very low blue-toned light makes the ambience relaxing and romantic, with help from the five lighted rose-colored columns, and candles flickering on the tables. The menu offers pricey American fare, items like broiled Atlantic salmon tapenade, crisp Long Island duck breast, and New York strips by the ounce. 1713 E. Main St. 344-8089. The old None Such Place in Shockoe Bottom has also undergone change. New owners are onboard and have decided to keep the old name and chef.
