Don Bachmann hired as interim general manager of TheatreVirginia

In 1998, Don Bachmann moved his family half-way across the country to Richmond from Kalamazoo, Mich., so that he could take a job as managing director of the Barksdale Theatre. About a year later, he was out of a job when the Barksdale released him from his contract. But this potential professional crisis may end up being a boon for Bachmann.

"The fates are shining on me, at least for now," says Bachmann, a theater veteran with more than 25 years of administrative experience. "My family has fallen in love with Virginia ... we were very happy when this came through." In April, Bachmann was hired as the interim general manager for TheatreVirginia. He calls the six-month appointment an "engagement period ... where they can see if they like me and I'll see if I like them."

In previous positions, Bachmann presided over major capital and building campaigns, a skill TVa may soon find particularly useful. The theater company has just started to ponder what it will do when it's lease at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts runs out in 2003. One possibility would be to build a new theater. "The Board of Trustees is considering several options," says Bachmann. "It's all at the feasibility level right now."
