Carl Hamm, aka DJ Carlito, is the local guy behind Bollywood night, but his musical taste knows no geographic boundaries. A big fan of Malaysian psychedelic pop from the '60s and '70s, a genre called pop yeh yeh (after the Beatles' “She Loves You”), Hamm launched an online Kickstarter project and raised $3,600 to fund a research trip to Malaysia and Singapore. There he'll collect music, film the original artists and learn more about their lives. His goal is to produce a compilation CD of digitally remastered 45-rpm records to be released on the Sublime Frequencies label, but he needs to track down the surviving artists for permission. Come hear these musicians, people such as Zaleha Hamid, Rahman Mohd, Betty Ismail and Hasnah Haron, at Carl's go-go-going away party and fundraiser (he'll have posters and CDs to sell). “I still need some additional money to get hotels, travel, and rent camera equipment, which is why I'm doing a wedding or a DJ gig every weekend till I leave,” he says. The pop yeh yeh happens Tuesday, June 22, at Balliceaux. Admission is free and Carl starts spinning at 10 p.m. 355-3008.
