It never quite closed, but the Science Museum of Virginia will host a "Grand Reopening Gala" to celebrate the end of nearly five years of hammering and sawdust.

The theme is "Discover Life!" and events will tout the museum's new and permanent life-sciences exhibit "Biospace." The 8,000-square-foot wonder is the centerpiece of renovations that have "kept the architectural integrity of the historic railroad station that houses the museum, while turning our John Russell Pope building into a contemporary science center," says Adrienne Hines, executive director of the museum's foundation, in a statement.

The gala offers dinner, dancing and what sounds to be an impressive laser show in the museum's 10-story rotunda. Start saving for the Oct. 20 event now: Tickets are $225 and up.

Oct. 21, novelist Patricia Cornwell and Bill Nye the Science Guy will join museum director Walter Witschey for a public unveiling. Call 367-1456 for the gala, 367-0000 for the public
