Born of the Crass school of abrasive anarchist punk, Cress’ cantankerous cacophonies are designed to agitate. It’s an anchovy of sound, oppressively salty to the uninitiated, an acquired taste to even the most adventurous musical palate. The same goes for its American tour mates, the West Virginia crust punks of Appalachian Terror Unit. Both groups deliberately make music that most people won’t like. But for those that enjoy a good racket, these flowers in the dustbin planted by the hamburger lady in the south of heaven the day the country died will help you strive to survive. If you don’t get the references packed into that sentence, you probably shouldn’t go. The show happens Monday, July 14, at Strange Matter, with No Tomorrow and Asylum. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8. strangematterrva.com.
