Cracking Glass

Theatre VCU's “The Glass Menagerie.”

Long before director Sam Mendes began examining the banality of everyday existence and the repressed need to escape from it in such films as “American Beauty” and “Revolutionary Road,” playwright Tennessee Williams had already laid the thematic groundwork in 1944 with “The Glass Menagerie.” Presented by Theatre VCU, this acclaimed drama follows the memories of Tom Wingfield, a man caught between freedom and guilt, struggling with the responsibility of supporting his mother and sister and his desire to live a life of his own. The show opens Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Singleton Performing Arts Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, with additional performances Feb. 13-14 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 19-21 at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 15 and 22 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8-$20. 922 Park Ave. 828-6026. — Mike Hilleary
