Cool off at the ice skating rink.

Think plunging into an icy swimming pool is the best way to cool down on a hot summer's eve? Think again. How about bundling up in your woolliest sweater, digging your mittens out of the mothballs and strapping on your ice skates instead? Even when it's pushing 100 degrees outside — in the shade, at sundown — the temperature of the ice rinks at SkateNation's two Richmond facilities remains a cool and constant 55 degrees. Fall down on the ice and your behind will be treated to a 20-degree seat.

SkateNation offers public skating sessions every day and many evenings throughout the summer (be sure to call ahead for schedules). Evening sessions are $6 plus $2.50 for rental skates. If you're really committed to keeping cool — and to improving your waltz jump — a summer season pass is available for $45 and gets you unlimited admission to public skating
