Few people work harder promoting the Richmond music scene than Shannon Cleary. When he isn’t hustling the sounds of the city on his always entertaining and informative local radio program, “Commonwealth of Notions” — which airs Saturdays from 1-3 a.m. on WRIR-FM 97.3 — you can find him at shows by our indigenous melody-makers. Starting Thursday, July 17, Cleary and WRIR present Volume 4, a homegrown, four-day music festival. It features more than 20 Richmond bands and DJs at Balliceaux, Strange Matter, Steady Sounds, Gallery5 and Ipanema. From the moody keyboard dance wave of Anousheh to the hooky pop punk of Close Talker, Richmond’s own Alan Freed has assembled a smorgasbord of talent from the 804. Proceeds benefit WRIR.
