City Bureaucracy Trudges on Creativity, Growth

“Rumors Busted: Police, ABC Hit Consignment Shop” (Street Talk, May 6) is such a clear example of how despite the best efforts of our city's leadership, Richmond will have a very difficult time ever becoming a true Mecca of art and culture.

It really is depressing that so many potential avenues for creativity and growth are stamped out by a bureaucracy that can't understand why its top-down initiatives are unsuccessful. The two young women that run Rumors have put everything they have into creating a great addition to the city and it is sad that more than a dozen law enforcement officers were necessary to deal with an issue as simple as zoning or taxes.

The types of close-minded attitudes expressed in the story demonstrate why grass-roots culture in Richmond will continue to fight an uphill battle.
