Cigarette Landmark to Get Fresh Coat

The tower has been repainted 10 or 15 times before, says Bill Phelps, a Philip Morris spokesman. So this time the company decided to strip off all the old paint, clean the tower and put on a fresh coat.

Sentimental Richmonders needn't worry: The design and color schemes will stay true to their original design, Phelps says.

Scaffolding went up last week. The painting should start in the next two weeks, says Darian Brown of Richmond Sign & Design Services, who won the contract to paint the tower. The refurbished identity pylon should be complete by late October, Phelps says. — Scott Bass
