CenterStage is scheduled to open this weekend. Why in the heck isn't anyone talking about it?

The $73.4 million renovation and construction of Richmond CenterStage is finally poised for its inaugural season of entertainment. But before it gets to the big touring shows of Broadway and other high-profile acts, the modernized arts center will play host to an equally qualified, if not more localized production. The grand opening features individual and combined performances by the African American Repertory Theatre, Elegba Folklore Society, Richmond Ballet, Richmond Jazz Society, Richmond Shakespeare, Richmond Symphony, School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community, Theatre IV-Barksdale and Virginia Opera. Audiences will be privy to a sampler showcase of the city's artistic talent at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Tickets are $35-$100 through Ticketmaster or A ribbon-cutting ceremony and free tours precede the night's entertainment at 4 p.m., and continue Sunday, Sept. 13, from 1-5 p.m. 600 E. Grace St. 343-0144. — Mike Hilleary
