Cake at the National

The king of ironic radio play in the late '90s, California's Cake is perhaps most widely recognized for its unique brand of geek rock, blending white-boy hipster funk, hip-hop and pop all under the deadpan, spoken-word lyricism of leader John McCrea. Delivering such smirking gems such as “Love You Madly,” “The Distance” and its biggest hit, “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” the members of Cake seemed to have slowed down their output, releasing just one album and a compilation of rarity tracks since 2004. Thankfully, with a new studio running completely on solar power, the sardonic collective has announced that a new album will be released this summer. Cake plays the National on Sunday, July 19, at 7 p.m. $30-$35. 612-1900, — Mike Hilleary
