Third Place: Hope Thrift

Many of us know about the good works Diversity Richmond does for the area. Since 1999, it has pumped $955,000 back into the community through grants to LGBT-focused organizations and other nonprofits, mainly from the thrift store’s proceeds. Last year, Diversity Richmond received a record 33 grant proposals, and today it has expanded outreach to new partners, including Richmond’s Alzheimer’s Association chapter, says Bill Harrison, the president and executive director. But what we want to know is, what’s the strangest donation to the thrift store? There are two, says Harrison: a “beautiful parrot made out of a car tire” and a large doll, its head replaced with the skull of a dog. “You never have any idea what’s going to come through the door,” he says, laughing.
