Second Place: Once Upon a Vine
Third Place: Kroger
Because voters appreciate a bargain — and a selection that would dizzy Dionysus, Total Wine & More continues to win fans. The online ordering is handy. If Internet shopping is too, uh, Internetty, if the wine must be swirled, the bouquet inhaled, Total Wine has two Richmond locations where wine tastings are regular Friday and Saturday events. Once Upon a Vine carries the largest selection of Virginia wine, more than 400 varieties, and owner Bob Kocher is worth visiting just to hear him extol the virtues of the petit verdot. What’s not on the shelves is in a climate-controlled warehouse, chilled to 66 degrees. The place now has 12 growler stations, with a sister store on the South Side co-owned Kocher and Tomy and Ben Harris. Kroger hits the convenience market. Cereal? Check. Chicken? Check. Cabernet sauvignon? Check.
