General Manager Charlie Lichter credits his customers’ enduring passion for Bottom’s Up’s pizza to its South American roots. “When [owner Coalter Turpin] started this place 27 years ago, he got the crust recipe from an Argentinean friend,” he says. “You’re not going to find that style many other places outside Richmond.” Plain and simple, Bottom’s Up filled a niche in Shockoe Bottom that no one else noticed back in 1990, and from its days as a tiny takeout spot on 19th Street to the two-floor building under the highway on Dock Street, its mix-and-match gourmet pizzas remain enduringly popular.
