Lou Gehrig famously said of baseball, “It is our national pastime and a game for all,” and the same could be said about the crowd at a Flying Squirrels game. Richmonders of all stripes show up for myriad reasons, not all of them involving a passion for the sport. Nearly every game offers an incentive — wine Wednesday, nurses’ night, doggie night, cap and T-shirt giveaways and Hispanic heritage night. There’s always the draw of a fireworks display after Thursday and Saturday games — and that doesn’t even include the actual pleasure of cheering on the Squirrels, even from a nosebleed seat. Go team.
