Second Place: Dominion Riverrock
Third Place: Monument Avenue 10-K
Voters rally behind their beloved minor league baseball team, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, who are still hoping against hope for that new stadium the city promised three years ago. So while everyone seems to have an idea about where to build a ballpark, the fans will always love their dogs, beer and baseball — regional squabbles be damned! As long as those politically scorned Squirrels stick around. Just last weekend, the three-day Dominion Riverrock festival proved its popularity (bottle-thrower be damned), finding a new home in the reader poll. It turns the downtown riverfront into a sprawling extreme sports event complete with big-name bands, such as headliner Toots and the Maytals. If there were any doubt about Richmond's strengths as an urban recreation center with its natural amenities, they've been dashed on the rocks. The ever-popular Monument Avenue 10-K has become a rite of passage for the health-conscious in Richmond, who take to the street by the thousands, some of them in costumes. Start training now for March 29, 2014.
