Best Mural Conversation Starter

Critics' Pick

Ah yes, the blue-haired girl with strawberries. The surreal mural on the building at 1011 W. Grace St., across from the 7-Eleven, officially is titled “Moonshine.” It was created for the annual Richmond Mural Project by Polish artists Sainer and Bezt, collectively known as Etam Cru. The piece has earned international acclaim, and the website Buzzfeed ranked it third in its survey of the best street art in the world for 2013. Prints of the image have sold like hotcakes through Art Whino — a Washington gallery. An interesting tidbit: The arts editor at the Honolulu Star Advertiser noted surprise that there wasn’t a response from Richmond feminists, because she thought that the work, though well-executed, was symbolic of a growing strain in street art that objectifies women, presenting them naked as “food” to be served up in a fetishized manner. Maybe people were too distracted by that cool blue hair?
