The Byrd Theatre

Readers' Pick

In spite of the uncomfortable chairs (designed for early-20th-century backsides), this historic landmark is the clear favorite among area moviegoers. It could just be that the price is right — $1.99 for most second-run screenings — but it also could be that the theater, erected in 1928, is the most beautiful place in Virginia to watch a movie (and, before weekend shows, Bob Gulledge still plays the mighty Wurlitzer organ, which rises from the orchestra pit). The Byrd plays host to special events throughout the year, such as the James River Film Festival, French Film Festival and 48 Hour Film Project.
